On Wednesday, at least seven people were killed in torrential rain, that swept large parts of the governorates of Al-Mahra and Shabwa, South Yemen, local sources said.

The sources said that three women and two children were drowned in the torrential rains in Bayhan region north of Shabwa, while two others died in Al-Mahra governorate.

In the oil-rich province of Hadramaut, local sources said that heavy rains flooded separate areas of the districts of Wadi and the sprawling Hadramaut desert, causing road cuts and significant material damage to property and agricultural lands.

Helicopters intervened to evacuate stranded people in Seiyun District.

"The governor of Hadramaut directed to provide direct assistance to all citizens in the affected areas in the valleys. The authorities continued to monitor the weather in the governorate" sources told "South24".

In Abyan governorate, the torrential rains caused dozens of cars to be detained in Wadi Ahwar, which led to the total cutting off of vehicular traffic on the international coastal road linking Aden and Mukalla to Hadramaut.

A number of mountainous and coastal Yemeni governorates are currently exposed to a new air depression accompanied by heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds that have caused severe damage to infrastructure and property and cut off main roads, especially in the governorates of Shabwa, Hadramout, Al Mahrah, Abyan and Lahj.

Residents in the southern province of Lahj said that the heavy rains and torrential rains in Al-Anad area on Wednesday caused great damage to shops and citizens' homes. On Tuesday, torrential rains cut off the main road linking Al-Dhalea to Aden, and prevented hundreds of cars in Radfan area from crossing.

Meteorological centers had warned days ago of turbulent weather conditions in a number of governorates in South and North Yemen.

Last year, flooding in Yemen left dozens dead and tens of thousands evacuated.
