Four civilians were killed and eight others, including three soldiers, were injured on Wednesday evening (September 23) when the Iran-aligned Houthi militia fired four ballistic missiles at areas in Al-Mudaribah and Ras Al-Arah District in Lahj Governorate, according to the latest toll provided by local sources to South24 Center.

A local source told South24 that the missiles targeted the areas of Al-Malabiyah and Al-Ruwais and the vicinity of Al-Haymah Market in the northern part of the district. One of the sites hit was Amr bin Al-As School in Al-Malabiyah, which was sheltering families displaced from nearby areas of fighting.

The source said five civilians were injured in the strike on the school, while three soldiers were wounded in a separate strike near Al-Haymah Market.

In an official statement issued later, the Lahj local authority confirmed that Amr bin Al-As School had been struck by two ballistic missiles. It said the school was being used as a shelter by dozens of families who had fled fighting in nearby areas. According to the statement, three civilians were killed and four others injured in the strike on the school, some of them critically.

The local authority said the school is located about 2.5 kilometers from the frontline. It called on the United Nations, the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs to document the incident and work to protect civilians and displaced people in the area.

The attack came two days after another missile strike targeted a popular market in front of the Bab Al-Mandab Commercial Complex in Al-Hajf area of Al-Mudaribah and Ras Al-Arah District.

Yemen’s Ministry of Human Rights confirmed that two ballistic missiles struck the market around midday on Monday (September 21), about an hour apart, injuring civilians and damaging shops and vehicles.

Al-Mudaribah and Ras Al-Arah District in Lahj Governorate has witnessed increasing military escalation in recent days, amid clashes between Southern forces and the Houthi militia across areas stretching from Al-Wazi’iyah in western Taiz to the Al-Mudaribah and Kahboub fronts near Bab Al-Mandab.
