International Concern Towards Houthis Escalation in Yemen

The failure to extend the UN truce in Yemen, until today, has raised international fears of the return of the war, which has been relatively halted for six months in the country.

On Sunday, the UN Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg announced the failure to reach an agreement on the updated truce proposal he submitted to the Yemeni parties.

This came after multiple Houthi statements, in which they threatened to target international interests and oil companies operating in areas under the control of the Presidential Council if their demands were not met.


On the night of the end of the truce, clashes erupted for a short period on the fronts of Al-Dhalea, South Yemen. The Southern forces accused the Houthis of carrying out artillery shelling against villages and countryside north of the governorate. 

Similar clashes also erupted in the southern Marib front, north and west of the city of Taiz, North Yemen. Yesterday, Yafa front in South witnessed clashes that lasted for hours between the Southern forces and the Houthis.

In a statement, early morning today, the US State Department expressed "unacceptability of Houthi rhetoric threatening commercial shipping and oil companies operating in the region."

Washington welcomed the Yemeni government's "support for the expanded truce proposal and the strong support of the countries in the region and the UN Security Council." It also urged the Houthis to "continue negotiations in good faith."

Yesterday, the French Foreign Ministry condemned "the threatening statements made by Houthi officials towards neighbors in Yemen." Paris stressed that "only a political solution, under the auspices of the United Nations, will end the war."

The Chargé d'Affaires of Russia to Yemen Evgeny Kudrov also stressed yesterday the need to maintain dialogue between the parties to the conflict in Yemen, after a meeting with the PLC member Aidrous Al-Zubaidi.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry called on the Yemeni parties to "find a peaceful solution, provide support for the UN talks, and strive to implement the truce again."
